What is Massage?

Massage is one of the oldest healing arts dating back over 3,000 years in Chinese records and documents; Hindus, Persians and Egyptians used forms of massage for different ailments. With over 250 different forms, massage improves circulation by bringing oxygen and other nutrients to body tissues relieving muscle tension, increasing mobility, and clearing metabolic waste to reduce pain and stiffness in the muscles created by everyday living.

How can Massage be beneficial?

Massage Therapy can be useful for many conditions. Some of the health benefits include:

  • Stress relief
  • Relaxation
  • Injury recovery
  • Pain-management
  •   Flexibility and range of motion improvement
  • Improved Circulation
  • Better posture
  • Preparation and recovery for athletes
  • Headaches and migraines
  •   Strengthens the Immune System
  • Pre-natal

Increased immune function, decreased recovery time and decrease in stress can also be seen through massage in many medical conditions including:

  • Arthritis
  • Allergies
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Circulatory conditions
  • Carpal Tunnel

Experts estimate that upwards of ninety percent of disease is stress related. Receiving a massage on a consistent basis creates changes in the body and can help maintain tension levels and overall good health.

Each Therapist can create a massage to fit your individual needs.

Types of massage

  • Deep Tissue : aimed at deeper tissues and structures of the muscle and fascia (connective tissue), deep tissue uses many of the same movement as Swedish, but with a more intense pressure and focus to release chronic muscle tension or knots

  • Neuromuscular: aimed at those with chronic pain. Muscles and fascia are manipulated to relieve pain and restore natural balance

  • Swedish : the most commonly known and offered. Using a firm but gentle pressure to improve circulation, flexibility, ease muscle aches and tension and increase relaxation, it is the foundation for other forms including deep tissue and sports massage, and uses five different movements:
    - long, gliding strokes

- kneading of individual muscles

- friction

- hacking or tapping

 - vibration

  • Sports Massage : designed for athletes to help prepare their bodies during training, performance, or recovery after a big event. Another form of Swedish massage that helps circulation, and in some cases, using trigger points to break down knots in the muscle and increase flexibility and range of motion. There are four types of sports massages:
    - pre-event:  a short, stimulating massage of the area involved in activity 15 - 45 minutes before the event.

- post-event:  given within one or two hours of the event, to normalize the body's tissues.

- restorative: during training to allow the athlete to train harder and with less injury.

- rehabilitative: aimed to alleviate pain due to injury and return the body to health.

  • Hot Stone : heated basalt stones are placed on key places of the body or used to massage certain areas. The heat relaxes the muscles, allowing more pressure and increasing the circulation and relaxing the body and nervous system

  • Acupressure : applied pressure to specific pressure points of the body to treat symptoms and balance the body's energy

  • Pre-Natal : for expectant mothers, works to relieve discomforts of pregnancy such as leg cramps, headaches, backaches, swelling and edema, morning sickness and promotes an overall well-being and sleep better during the night

  • Chair Massage : 10 minute session to the neck, shoulders, back and arms, increasing circulation and melting away stress
