What is Yoga?
The word yoga means "union" in Sanskrit dating back 5,000 years ago to the language of ancient India. The "union" is between the mind, body and spirit. The word asana in Sanskrit, which is the practice of physical postures and poses, is more commonly referred to as "yoga."
What are the benefits of yoga?
There are many benefits to practicing Yoga including increased flexibility, strength, pain prevention, stress reduction, increased blood circulation, improved sleep habits and overall body awareness.
Individuals respond differently based on several factors; age, physical condition, genetics etc. Practicing Yoga 2-3 times per week consistently, will show results to individuals over time. Yoga practice requires repetition, consistency and discipline in order to gain the true benefits.
Class Descriptions:
Strengthen and Stretch: This class focuses on gentle exercises to strengthen over-lengthened and weakened muscles. Stretching short muscles, and strengthening the longer muscles, allows the weight of the body to be carried more efficiently, easing general aches and pains. Core muscles become stronger and are not encouraging back muscles to be tight. Class includes a guided relaxation.
Stretch and Relax: This class stretches the body from head to toe. Stretches are held for 30+ seconds and are generally repeated several time on each side. Muscles target's are involved in common postural deviations. Class begins with encouragement to request specific areas of the body be lengthened. A guided relaxation exercise completes the hour. Stretches and relaxation techniques are easily used at home.
Viniyoga: Viniyoga takes a student right where they are & focuses on the function of the posture rather that form. The breath is intimately connected to movement & the origin of movement becomes the breath itself. We then create alignment through breath.
In asana practice, the focus is through repetition and stay, moving in & out of postures with the breath, compensation, postures that release tensions from stay and bring the body back to balance. Through repetition, you have the alternation of contraction of core muscles stretching which increase circulation to the muscles and joints. This helps the body prepare to stay in a particular posture. The stay within certain postures allows you a deep connection to that pose as well as your body and mind creating an appreciation for the present.
